I have never found a razor that works on my thick beard until I discovered this. I’d used Merkur razors before but this is a real heavy duty product and cuts right through the hair. I also love the long handled style – makes it so much easier to hold while I do the job. (Posted on 4/27/2015)
Short version: Get one. It really is a great razor.
The 39c is the third slant I've used. I got a 37c very soon after starting DE shaving. I now realize I did that too soon, my technique was still wildly inconsistent, and I foolishly blamed the razor. I got some great shaves, and some terrible ones. I ended up selling it after a few weeks. Fast forward eight months, and I got to try an iKon Slant head in a pass around. I liked that it was heavier than the 37c, and I got quality shaves. I was not blown away or jonesing to buy one, mostly due to price.
Shortly after, I opted into a PIF and won a 39c. I had been intrigued by the extra weight and length and I was very eager to try the sledgehammer. I admit that I was a bit worried because my last few 37c shaves were poor, but my fears were unwarranted. The 39c shaves very smoothly and comfortably with no change to my usual technique. I got great shaves from the start, only getting irritation when I experimented with different pass sequence, blades, or was careless.
Loading the blade is very easy and consistent, not much fiddling required. So far, I've found great shaves with Personna Lab Blue, Astra SP, and Gillette SE Yellow. My results with Gillette Silver Blue were not quite as good, and Feathers were either too harsh, or my technique is not up to the task yet.
The 39c is clearly a quality instrument, one I find myself wanting to use everyday. My usual go to razor is an iKon SC101, but I'm wavering on that a bit lately. I prefer the audible feedback, weight, and length of the 39c over the 37c. The shaves I got with the 39c are as good as the shaves I got with the iKon Slant (not DLC) head on my SC handle. I cannot afford the iKon, so it's not really a competition between them, but now that I've used the Vorschlaghammer, I don't think I'd spend all that money on the iKon, even though it is beautiful and effective. The other beast! This is a pretty aggressive razor and demands respect. It seems like it would just eat you alive, but if handled with care your shave with be phenomenal! I previously used the 37C but the shorter handle wasn't working for me. So I gave this a whirl and it was a perfect fit! (Posted on 8/11/2014)
The 39c is the longer handled version of the 37c. I loved my 37c and was very sad when it broke. The 39c, I thought, would be great since I thought the 37c handle was a bit too short. I was sorta right. The longer handle gives the razor a bit too much weight, which takes the efficiency of the 37c and adds a bit of unwieldy length. It's still a great razor, but only those with truly enormous hands will find this to be better than the 37c. (Posted on 6/30/2014)
